I was recently thinking about suggesting a mod that added shields in, and luckily I found this: Asgard Shield Mod: www.minecraftforum.net/topic/897335-100smp-asgard-shield-mod/
It basically adds in 8 different shields (wood, stone, iron, diamond and gilded versions of each), which when holding a sword and press F, will toggle to the shield in your inventory. You can use it to block, and there's an Aussie who reviews it and makes it pretty funny. Anyway, this mod has SMP support and could prove good for RP and combat on the server.
Of course, there was also another I found called Nerd-Boys Shield Mod, but this doesn't have SMP support, but is planned, and it is a better form of shields in my opinion. Check it out: www.minecraftforum.net/topic/895339-100-nerd-boys-shield-mod-100-initial-release/
